Wherein may need this information if I win tomorrow's raffle so I only need answers before 4pm Friday afternoon
Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360 -- which one and why? Some background: I currently don't have a game system and haven't owned a game system since Colecovision in the early 1980s. Also don't have an HDtv nor a Blu-Ray player, buy very few DVDs and I'm perfectly happy with traditional DVDs.

Wii, then. Or Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!
Don't really need much beyond Wii Sports, and maybe Rockband if that interests you.
Wii Fit is sort of interesting, but also kind of not.
But, after a few months of playing every day, the Wii in my house collects dust (but that's OK, since it's white, it doesn't show).
Xbox360 might be interesting for reasons beyond gaming, though. Don't know what sort of set-up you have, but the 360 acts as a media extender for PCs, so if you have a nice receiver hooked up to your TV, but not your PC, this is a way to get content from one to the other.
Also, Microsoft is adding netflix downloadable movies in their Marketplace, which may not be a big selling point if you aren't all that into current films, but it is something.
Eventually, you probably will upgrade to HDTV, so when that happens you'll appreciate the better graphics of the 360 (Wii looks like crap compared to the 360 and the PS3), and they have some great casual and classic games available as downloadable content (assuming you get a model with a hard drive). Some of the more fun games available for both the 360 and the PS3 are their smaller, simpler, downloadable arcade games (and might be easier for you to get into than the disc based games that require 20-30 hours or more to complete).
Wii is good for the occasional casual game, and it's especially fun as a 'party' console when you've got a group of folks over. The 360 has some nice games available, and is an excellent media extender, but most of the better games are designed to be serious time sinks.
I suspect your family would get more enjoyment out of the Wii, it's easier to get into, though the games have less depth and lose their appeal outside of being part of a social gathering pretty quickly.
So I guess it comes down to how you expect to play, if you expect to play alone, or against folks online, then the 360 is much better, if you expect to play with friends and family from time to time, then the Wii is plenty fun (otherwise it'll just sit and collect dust).
Don't know what sort of set-up you have
We don't have a set up. Just a TV. No receivers, no speakers.

I'm not here to judge.
The Wii would provide more happy family fun time, then (and the advantages the Xbox 360 has over the Wii wouldn't mean much for you).
