For all the movies I've watched before
Wherein its all about the popcorn. No butter please and no I don't want a larger size
I think I’ve seen a lot of movies, then I do little exercise like this and I think maybe not. Below is a list from 1964 to the present of all Oscar Best Film nominees. Movies pulled from Filmsite.
From 1964 on, there are ten Best Picture winners I have not seen. I was doing pretty well until 1996 when I got married. “A Man for all Seasons” (1966), “In the Heat of the Night” (1967) “Driving Miss Daisy” (1989), “The English Patient” (1996), “Titanic” (1997), “American Beauty” (1999), “A Beautiful Mind” (2001), “Chicago” (2002), “Million Dollar Baby” (2004), “Crash” (2005).
But I have seen a fair amount of total nominees; so maybe I have wasted a lot of time in the theater. Which I did in the 1980s. Lots of time spent at the U of Minn Film Society, or at the Uptown Theater (back when it ran double headers of old movies and foreign language movies). For the record, most of my movie viewing has been solo. Just too much hassle to find someone to see a movie with, plus most of my friends have always had different movie interests than me. Like the time a bunch of guys dragged me to see Porky's when I wanted to see Das Boot on the glorious 70MM screen. Yes, both movies were released the same summer. I went to Das Boot the next night, and afterwards was always busy whenever they proposed a movie.
For me, the most disappointing year has to be 1979, when Kramer vs Kramer won. A truly horrible and insulting movie. And three of the nominees are probably on my list of all-time great movies, "All That Jazz", "Apocalypse Now", "Breaking Away." "Norma Rae" was the other nominee and also was better than Kramer.
Years I have seen none (0, zero) of the nominees: 2004, 2005. By now, I'm seeing 4-5 movies a year and let's say 75% will be appropriate for preschoolers. Plus, we don't have HBO or Showtime, so we're not seeing anything until it comes out on free cable - about 2 years later. We've been loaned the DVD of Sideways and are still trying to find the time to watch it.
Years I have seen four of the nominees: 1964, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1989, 1991.

4 Comments:
Ah, "Apocalypse Now", one of the all-time best movie comedies. Added bonus: it inspired a good scene in "Hot Shots: Part Deux". "I loved you in 'Wall Street'!"
I could have perhaps added a header to that last comment:
Wherein I see if I can make Bill's head explode.
But since "Scanners" wasn't on the list....
Comedy, sure, I can go there.
never get out of the boat
HA!
