Musical rebus #9

Wherein a song from the greatest performer ever to sing at the Superbowl

Thursday, August 20, 2009

Short quote: fogeyism

Wherein why back in my day

Adso, the narrator, from The Name of the Rose:
In the past men were handsome and great (now they are children and dwarfs), but this is merely one of the many facts that demonstrate the disaster of an aging world. The young no longer want to study anything, learning is in decline, the whole world walks on its head, blind men lead others equally blind and cause them to plunge into the abyss, birds leave the nest before they can fly, the jackass plays the lyre, oxen dance. Mary no longer loves the contemplative life and Martha no longer loves the active life, Leah is sterile, Rachel has a carnal eye, Cato visits brothels, Lucretius becomes a woman. Everything is on the wrong path. In those days, thank God, I acquired from my master the desire to learn and a sense of the straightway, which remains even when the path is tortuous.

Wherein I would've gone with The less said about Merlin Olsen's acting range will still be greater than Merlin Olsen's acting range

1. corsets

2. Tennessee Vols women's basketball coach. Pat something...not Summerall...he's the old, possibly dead, football guy.

3. On Sports Night, wouldn't it have been ex-wife? I can picture the guy, just not his name; Tim? The taller of the two Sports Night anchors. Looking at the cast names, with no pictures or other ID'ing features, it's Peter.

4. Silver or gold, I'll pick silver.

5. Sears Tower

6. Mommas And The Poppas

7. next question

Name the well-known childrens' story

Wherein still better than the rainbow fish

After witnessing his mother's murder he becomes a male prostitute for an old woman and later marries his cousin. With no other credentials than a sharp suit and a fancy car he becomes king after the old king mysteriously dies of poisoning. And for a bold example of cronyism rewards the guy who nominated him for king with a lucrative government position.

It's all rather shocking.

Isn't "retour des cendres" an Elvis Presley song?

Wherein address unknown

1. nebula

2. Dog Day Afternoon

3. Monopoly, boardgame of

4. something to do with about his body...or his shriveled male member soaking in a jar of formaldehyde. Ok, that penis thing was meant as a joke, but I'm closer to an actual urban legend than I thought. Though we all know that the Smithsonianians are lying liars about John Dillinger.

5. DK

6. A myth involving Greek men and sheep? Heh heh heh. Jason.

7. Might have occurred to me if I'd sat on it for awhile, but I easily figured this out with very little research. The lightbulb moment was seeing [xxxxxxx] in the "My Two Dads" description; I'd forgotten about that.

Musical Rebus #7

Wherein last word is probably an unfair clue but I like it and you should have solved it by then so too bad

To make it a little harder I haven't divided the words. There are seven of them, but you'll have to decide where they begin and end.

Since I just thought of it, here's a new clue for the last word:

Jimmy in Wonderland

Wherein so how's that legacy thing working out for you

This all started when I couldn't remember "Habitat for Humanity." But I thought I'd try to find by searching Jimmy Carter's name. Considering google's suggestions, when people are researching Jimmy Carter they're not interested in peace in the Middle East or homes for poor people, or even peanuts or Plains, GA. No, what they (we?) apparently need more intel on are the adventures of a failure and his giant rabbit. Maybe more "Harvey" than "Alice" but with an unhappy ending?

Wherein I've started work on the next musical rebus and I think it will be a fun one

1. Was there a Ginger Spice or am I getting this mixed up with Strawberry Shortcake?
3. My guesses in descending order: Food, fire, fun, fritata
4. Hawaii & Alaska
5. Bach
6. FF Coppola
7. Three hockey, two basketball, two baseball, no football -- seems like it should be a clue.
